Hyderabad, March 2025 – A massive protest escalated at Osmania University’s New Godavari hostel on Tuesday night after students reportedly find out a razor blade in their dinner curry. Agitated by the incident, they shut down the university’s main road, holding up the contaminated food tray, students called out a slogan in protest against the administration. The protesters demanded rapid action from Vice-Chancellor Prof. M. Kumar, calling for strict action in safety and hygiene in hostel meals.
Ongoing Complaints About Food and Hygiene:
Protesting students mentioned this is not the first that the hostel mess given spoiled food, and now recent incidents indicates that the students found the razor blade in dinner curry, these unsolved queries triggered college students to raise their voice against their college administration through protest along with slogan boards in their hands. Just two days earlier, worms were allegedly found in a cabbage curry served at the hostel mess, additional to worms, students reported finding other foreign objects in their meals like glass pieces being noted in food on previous occurrence. Even though the complaints are made administration doesn’t take any methods to rectify it. So, the Students organized protests to demand accountability and immediate action to improve hygiene in the mess.
Suspicious Circumstances:
In response to the protests, the university administration took prompt action by organising special committee has been formed to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Chief Warden G. Srinivas Rao raised suspicions regarding the presence of the razor blade in the food. He mentioned out that the blade remained undamaged with its original paper covering, making accidental and it has minimal chance of contamination. This made concerns that the blade might have been put in the food on purpose, rather than being accidentally mixed in. By understanding the seriousness of the matter administration people filled a complaint in the station. The complaint was given in the name of two mess workers and a student as well. Law authorities are involved in gathering information and also investigating the case to determine the nature of this case.
Request for Enhanced Hostel Facilities:
Complaints are not only on the food safety but also criticize the poor conditions in hostel, the major issue is irregular supply of water and dirty and reliable water is affecting the student’s health. Regards to these issues the students started their protest and their request for a water well to provide a consistent and dependable water source for the hostel residents.
Administration’s Action Plan:
The administration given a response that they will take prompt actions on their concerns according to their needs, but students remain no trust in their words. Again, admin authorities informed that they implement a strict plan regards to their food and water problem to improve their living condition in hostel.
Never-ending Protest: The university is investigating the food contamination claims and will take action based on the findings. Students have warned they will continue protesting if their concerns are not addressed. Local police are also looking into the possibility that the contamination was deliberate, as suggested by the university. The incident has raised concerns among students and parents about the quality of hostel management and mess facilities. There is a clear need for improvements in both areas to ensure student well-being.
