Historical Significance of Pazhassi Raja

         1.  Also called as Kerala Varma (3 January 1753 – 30 November 1805) was a courageous and powerful leader who governed the regions of Kottayam and Malabar in Kerala on the period of late 18th century. Pazhassi Raja was celebrated and honoured as a pioneer of India’s independence movement, Varma fought a long and strong battle against the British rule with his brave warriors.

        2.Strating from 1753, Varma’s struggle against colonial forces prolonged for over 3 decades (30 Years), that makes Varma a lasting symbol of rebellion and fearlessness leader.

       3.Pazhassi Raja mainly fought against the British mainly due to their exploitative tax policies and their aim is to control over his kingdom. In his ruling time period, Varma joined local tribes such as Kurichiya and Kurumba against British rule. Varma leadership inspired these groups to join his resistance movement.

       4.Pazhassi Raja fought using Guerrilla tactics in the thick forests and hills of the Western Ghats. His clever use of the land and ability to gather tribal fighters made him a strong and tough enemy for the British.

       1.The newly opened cave near Pandalur in the Nilgiris district was used by Pazhassi Raja and his warriors as a hideout during their guerrilla campaigns against the British.

       2. The strategical dense forests and hilly terrain of the Nilgiris and Wayanad regions offered the perfect setting for Struggle campaigns, Offering protection and strategic advantages.

       3.Ancient reports says that the cave was used actively between 1791&1802 a period where Pazhasi Raja was mostly involved in his battle against colonial rulers.        1.Pazhassi Raja and his warriors used swift, sudden assault on British soldiers, striking them in dense forests and disappearing before retaliation. This method frustrated the British and drained their resources.

      2. The hilly forests of Wayanad and Nigiris provided natural cover, making it difficult for the British to track and counter Pazhassi Raja’s movements.

      3.Pazhassi Raja gained more power and support from the tribes like Kurichiya warriors, who were skilled in archery and guerrilla tactics, played a vital role in Pazhassi Raja’s resistance.

     4. Guerrila war was not just military but also economic. Pazhassi Raja opposed the heavy taxes imposed by the British, which burdened the local people.

Pazhassi cave (Pulpally Cave) was officially inaugurated by Kochu Thamburatti Subha Varma on 02.03.2025 (a sixth-generation descendant of Pazhassi Raja), who is currently residing in USA, and also accompanied by her husband, Dr. Kishore and together they saluted Pazhassi portrait by offering flowers.
